ALTER-EU campaign strategy

ALTER-EU has led the debate in Brussels and in Europe on the ETI and the need for lobby disclosure and ethics regulation. It has:

  • Represented the concerns and demands of its broad membership at key stages of the ETI consultation process;
  • Built a confident working relationship with key EU officials, including Commissioner Kallas, as part of its involvement in the ETI debate;
  • Become a reliable point of reference for journalists covering the issue of lobby disclosure;
  • Disclosed the financial information of its Steering Committee member groups – aiming to disclose that of all of its 200+ members – because ALTER-EU considers it of the utmost importance to be transparent about groups’ financing sources (links to the individual members’ financial pages can be accessed via this website);
  • Organised a number of conferences and workshops in Brussels and across Europe to inform directly its membership and interested parties about the debate and consolidate a cohesive pan-European strategy;
  • Facilitated information flow among members through a specialised listserver.

Up until 2011, individual member organisations have also organised the “Worst EU Lobby Awards” as a way of exposing, to the media and the public, the most dubious and un-democratic lobbying cases in Brussels.
