ALTER-EU welcomes Commissioner Barnier's recognition of the need  to ''achieve a fair balance of non-industry stakeholders’ representation'' in the expert groups dealing with the EU financial reform.

Executive summary / policy recommendations:

ALTER-EU has written to Commissioner Michael Barnier to congratulate him on the steps he has taken regarding the consultative bodies of the new EU financial supervision authorities. In the letter, ALTER-EU stresses the need to secure an equal representation of non-commercial actors (academics, NGOs, unions, comsumers) in all expert groups.

It also calls on him to end the bad practice of branding corporate lobbyists as neutral experts committed to the public interest, as is the case for 191 lobbyists in eight expert groups.

This letter follows correspondance with Commissioner Barnier regarding the publication of the report ' 'A captive Commission' by ALTER-EU in November 2009.
