The recent scandal surrounding MEPs who allowed themselves to be corrupted by journalists posing as lobbyists has lifted the veil on the often ambiguous relationships between representatives of interest groups and European institutions.

[T]he EU has established a system for the voluntary registration of lobbyists and is preparing to adopt a code of conduct that will ensure the transparent disclosure of interests. According to the NGO Alter-EU, which campaigns for transparency in the field of lobbying, only 40% of lobbying groups have submitted their details to the register.
